I wanted to make this Ikea play kitchen since the first time I saw it on pinterest! There are so many good ikea hacks out there but this is MY favorite. I ended up doing it for Stella’s first birthday present which was during quarantine so why not!!
I decided early on NOT to paint the kitchen cabinets because I personally thought the original design worked well for us. Also, less work for me!! I read some blog posts about figuring out which pieces to paint prior to assembling it and I was like forget it!! HAHA
However, I did spray paint the faucet, cabinet hardware and sink gold! This was simple, I just took it out to our garage and spray painted it with my favorite gold spray paint. I think I will touch it up soon and put on a clear coat for extra durability… after all, it is for kids!! I opted not to install the bar over backsplash with hooks that came with the kitchen. I thought it would clutter the look of it of the kitchen.
I used marble contact paper for the countertop. I placed the paper down flat to measure and trace the cooktop and sink hole so I could cut those out. I carefully attached the paper removing the backing a little at a time to ensure it was lining up straight. This also helped me smooth out the air bubbles. For the backsplash, I used adhesive subway tile sheets. I measured and cut a spare piece of cardboard for the backing. I installed the tile first and then used a staple gun to attach the cardboard piece on the back side of the kitchen.
I decorated it with a few play kitchen goodies and voila!! The kids love playing with the kitchen and honestly, I know they would no matter what it looked like BUT hey, I love the aesthetics of it now!
