When I decided to replace our carpet in the basement, I got a lot of questions about why I didn’t put wood or some sort of wood tile etc! And these 4 steps is how I determined my decision.
Our home is a split level so it is really important for the flooring to be cohesive because there is not much separation. The main floor and upstairs of our home is the same wood throughout. That is also the same wood we uncovered on the basement stairs which we did end up leaving exposed. THUS we would want to try and match the wood to the current flooring if we went that direction in the basement but I did not think that was the right decision for the space. For one, that would be costly and I don’t believe it would be a true match. Secondly, it is the basement aka family/playroom so carpet was really our best option so it was comfortable for its function.
Our basement is truly apart of our home due to the make up of our house. I opted for a neutral color with a little texture to tie it back in with my style/personality. All in all, these 4 steps made my decision way easier!! Hope this helps you on your journey when selecting flooring!
step 1
Try to keep your flooring neutral to allow for design changes over time. This will allow for your space to evolve over time without having to change a costly investment like your flooring.
step 2
Factor in the location and function of the space. You should ask yourself how will the flooring hold up? What maintenance does it require?
step 3
Consider your budget! However, it is important for flooring to be durable, be installed correctly etc.
step 4
Keep your personality and style in mind but also consider the resale of your home!
