books on kindness and our differences
Today, I am rounding up the books we currently have about kindness, being different and loving ourself and others! I cannot take credit for all of these books – some were gifted by my Mom who is an elementary school counselor and others were the book of the month at Mikey’s School. I am also looking into getting more books specifically about racism and starting to engage in that topic with my children as it is utterly important, we educate ourselves and our children.
I Like Myself!
By Karen Beaumont
Illustrated by David Catrow
I feel like this book is especially important because I think you truly need to LOVE yourself so that you can share and spread that love to others. The book shows you how to truly embrace your differences and similarities – which we all need to be reminded of sometimes!
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood – The Poetry of Mister Rogers
Lyrics by Fred Rogers
Illustrations by Luke Flowers
First off, I LOVE Mister Rogers! So, I had to get this book. This one is great for all ages because you can sing and hum the lyrics while teaching important life lessons of kindness.
“It’s you I like. It’s not the things you wear; It’s not the way you do your hair – But it’s you I like.” – Mister Rogers
Whoever You Are
By Mem Fox
Illustrated by Leslie Staub
This book is a good representation of differences of ALL types: color, religion, features, culture, language and so much more. The illustrations are beautiful. We learned about this one through Mikey’s school and I was very impressed with their selection.
SAY Something!
By Peter H. Reynolds
This book is a wonderful reminder that the world needs our voice – no matter how! Words, art, music, poetry, courage, presence.
I ended on this one because while I know this post isn’t perfect nor is my ally-ship during these times. But “the world needs our voice… it doesn’t need to be perfect, as long as it’s from your heart.” So keep speaking from your heart and standing with others who need us.
I hope you find these books helpful in your journey to spread kindness in the world. Send more suggestions of books you love for kids about kindness, racism, diversity my way! We are always looking to do better.
