DIY rocket ship + solar system
You guys! This rocket ship was SO fun AND rewarding to make! Mikey is already super in to outer space and astronauts, so it was the perfect backdrop for him to pretend being Neil Armstrong.
I created the solar system by using templates of the planets I made in canva. I colored them to resemble the look of each planet. You could use the same templates and have your kids decorate them using whatever art supplies you have. I used party streamers for the backdrop of the solar system and just taped each streamer to a strip of cardboard for them to hang off of. I then attached each planet with string and there you go! You can create, learn and decorate with the solar system!
What you’ll need to create the solar system
-colored pencils or any supplies you want to use to decorate the planets
-string
-tape
Now for the rocket ship! I used the BIGGEST cardboard box we had. I started by tracing out the rocket shape on the front to figure out what pieces I would need to make and decide where to cut the hole for the ‘window’. Then, I mixed some black paint with blue glitter paint to create the atmosphere around the rocket ship. I used a combination of my paper cutter and Cricut to create the shapes of the ship. Once made, I attached them to the box using my hot glue gun. I used streamers for the rocket fire and for a couple of the details along with star wasabi tape.
I hot glued the stars (made on the Cricut but you could print a star from the internet to use a template and cut your own out of whatever paper you have on hand) and pom poms all over the ‘atmosphere’ and on the sides. The paper around the sides of our box is literally the packing paper that was inside the box. I draped it around the sides and hot glued it in place giving a textured look.
For the doors, I glued the streamers to make them festive. I used a hole punch and twine to create handles on the doors and added pom poms for extra security to ensure the twine would stay in place. The inside is the ‘command center’. Again, I used a combination of my Cricut and paper cutter to make the inside décor. If you don’t have a circuit, you could print out letters/numbers on the computer and glue on or use markers! Just use what you have!!

Mikey still loves playing with his rocket ship!! In an effort to keep Stella from destroying it, we have moved it to his room and it got me thinking… that I should transform his room into a space-theme?!?! Comment below if you AGREE! 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…. BLAST OFF!
